Vintage Ludwig Drums
The Mach series was introduced in the 1970 catalog. It was offered as two different outfits; the Mach 4, and the Mach 5. Shell construction for Mach series drums was consistent with all wood kit's of this era. It was a 3-ply build of maple/poplar/maple. Large lugs extending from both end of the shell was the innovative design made specific for the Mach series.

This design created resilience for the shell in high tension tuning. This concept was influenced by the design offered in their field snare drums. The Mach series was short lived due to low sales and was soon discontinued in 1975. It was said to be a concept ahead of it’s time, which would see a resurgence through most drum manufacturer’s of the 1980’s.
